The Man I Want to Be
When I was 23 years old I was living in my parents basement, waiting tables 32 hours a week, directionless, purposeless, and feeling sorry for myself. The fight in me was no where to be found and my life of ease was killing me on the inside. I went out to the garage to talk to my Pops and to share my woes in hopes he would just listen (and secretly hoping he’d give me a kick in the pants to make something of myself). He did both.
“Son, what kind of man do you want to be?”
“Idk Pops.”
“I would figure out what kind of man you want to be and then pursue that vision relentlessly for the rest of your life.”
A fire sparked inside of me when he asked that question; Pops had given me that charge. Now I had something to do, something to search after, someone to become. I sat down at my desk, took out my journal, and wrote at the top of the page “The Man I Want to Be.” The journey had begun.
