Pops paid me $50 to read Deuteronomy when I was eight years old. Maybe I was ten. Either way, I was young enough to believe $50 could buy me anything. The possibilities were endless for my little mind so I set out to earn my prize. Seven months later, I received a crisp $50 bill. It probably took me one day to spend.

As a child, it took me forever to read Deuteronomy. I’m sure I thought it was dull, confusing, and so so long. Now as an adult, I read the first eleven chapters almost every month. Chapters 6-8 have had a special effect on me for the last three years as I have stepped into the next stage of life: marriage and parenting.

Chapter 6 has me pondering today.

“And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise.” (Deuteronomy. 6:6-7)
