Theodore Roosevelt wrote his autobiography in 1913 after his defeat for a third term as President of the United States. It was a race he could not win and he knew it. The direction of the Republican Party, the nation, and his handpicked replacement President William Taft irked him. He believed the country was headed in the wrong direction and he must do something about it.
